Campus Idol – 2013 Report
The Federation of Students at the University of Waterloo had the pleasure of hosting this year’s Campus Idol competition! We had a great audience turnout, some travelling from down the street and others driving in from as far as Orillia to support their school’s contestants. Each of the eight participants sang their heart out in an attempt to win the grand prize of $750 and title of Campus Idol. A wide variety of skill was displayed and the audience was captivated by the variety of song choices by the contestants. Genres and styles of music ranged from soul to hip-hop; R&B to country to pop. The skills of each contestant was astounding, and the set of pipes these young singers have is amazing. Ultimately, as with this type of competition, one winner came out as the favourite of the judges and audience.
Clarissa Diokno, from the University of Waterloo, was the winner of the $750 cash prize and title of Campus Idol. Her dynamic vocal range and ability to give Carrie Underwood a run for her money placed this fourth year student at the top of the judges list with her cover of “Last Name”. Runner-up was Wilfrid Laurier University student Andrew Dolson, who soothed the crowd and judges with his renditions of songs by Mumford & Songs and Michael Bublé.
Also from the University of Waterloo were Elise Brisson and Elliot Li. Other contestants included Wilfrid Laurier University students Lindsay Tribble and Isabel Lopes, as well as Jennifer Goldsmith from Laurentian University (Georgian College) and Chad Peitch from Georgian College in Orillia.
The panel of judges consisted of three local musicians and singers. Sam Bartel, the winner of Waterloo Campus Idol in 2012, was joined by fellow University of Waterloo student and musician Steve Wong, guitarist for the band Whites and Colours. Alongside these two uWaterloo talents was Sam Dlugokecki, an active independent musician and music instructor at Sherwood Music in Kitchener, Ontario.
Song favourites of the night included “Sweet Child of Mine” (sung by Jennifer), “Feeling Good” (sung by Lindsay), and “Titanium” (sung by Elise).
